Taking inspiration from the otherworldly BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage concept, the 2023 3.0 CSL is a celebration of both the 50th anniversary of the firm’s M division and one of the greatest cars to ever wear Munich’s famous roundel. Fittingly, just 50 of these incredible cars were built, with this example presenting a rare opportunity to acquire the model at public auction.
The 3.0 CSL shares most of its mechanical components—including its 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six—with the production BMW M4. Tuned for 560 horsepower, it was the most powerful straight-six engine BMW had ever produced at the time of launch, echoing the 206-horsepower unit in the 1973 ‘Batmobile’ that held the same accolade. Unlike the production M4, the 3.0 CSL was only offered with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Just 50 examples were built, each hand crafted by a team of 30 technicians at BMW’s Dingolfing plant and taking 10 days to complete. Much of that manpower can be attributed to the 3.0 CSL’s stunning bodywork which, unlike the standard M4, makes extensive use of carbon fibre. The roof, bonnet, and boot are all made entirely from the material, along with the sills, aprons, rear diffuser, and spoiler. The exhaust system includes a titanium rear silencer, while the motorsport-inspired 20- and 21-inch Y-spoke centre lock wheels are forged. Even the tyres are unique to the model, with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S rubber bearing the “50” moniker on their sidewalls.
The example offered is numbered 44 of just 50 built, and was ordered by the consigning owner from Bayern Avenue S.A.S. of Cannes, France on 4 August 2023. Like all its sister cars it was finished in Alpine White over a Black Alcantara interior with an Alcantara steering wheel, anthracite headlining, and the same M Carbon seats that feature in the M4. An impressive equipment list includes carbon ceramic disc brakes, M-Sport self-locking differential, reversing camera, and dual-zone air conditioning. At the time of cataloguing the car’s odometer read just 33 kilometres , while it is offered complete with its original BMW-supplied artwork and scale model.
